Health and Safety Policy

Reviewed April 2025

At Jasmine Dance Academy, we are committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and supportive environment for all students, teachers, parents/guardians, and visitors. This policy outlines our health and safety procedures, responsibilities, and expectations for everyone involved in the running and attendance of our school.

Our Responsibility

Jasmine Dance Academy, led by Principal Jasmine Downer, takes overall responsibility for ensuring that health and safety standards are followed and regularly reviewed. All teachers and volunteers are expected to uphold these standards in all teaching and operational environments.

We are committed to:

  • Providing a safe environment for dance activities

  • Conducting regular risk assessments

  • Ensuring staff are trained in First Aid and emergency procedures

  • Responding to any safety concerns promptly and appropriately

Your Responsibility

All parents/guardians, and students play an important role in maintaining a safe space.

We ask that you:

  • Follow teacher instructions at all times

  • Take reasonable care of your own safety and that of others

  • Report any health and safety concerns to a staff member immediately

  • Ensure that emergency contact and medical information is kept up to date

  • Inform us of any changes to your child’s health or circumstances that may affect their safety in class

Student & Parent Guidelines

To help us keep your child safe, we ask that parents/guardians:

  • Submit all trial/enrolment forms via Class Manager before attending class.

  • Ensure children are supervised in car parks, waiting areas, and toilet areas before and after class.

  • Keep all contact details up to date.

  • Inform us of any injuries or health concerns before each class.

  • Ensure students arrive on time—missing the warm-up may increase risk of injury.

  • Provide students with water and appropriate snacks for energy.

  • Dress students in correct uniform and footwear. Footwear should be securely fastened and appropriate for the class.

  • Ensure no jewellery is worn, except small stud earrings, to reduce the risk of injury.

Students will not be allowed to leave the venue unless collected by a parent/guardian or unless written permission has been given in advance for another arrangement.

Risk Assessments & Safety Checks

  • Risk assessments are carried out for all venues and activities and updated as needed.

  • Teachers will inspect the dance space before each class to ensure it is clean, safe, and free of hazards.

  • All teachers have received venue-specific induction training (e.g. emergency exits, fire procedures, First Aid kit locations).

Venue Responsibilities

  • Jasmine Dance Academy hires facilities from third-party venues. We work closely with venue providers to ensure the spaces meet safety standards. While we carry out our own checks before each session, the general maintenance and infrastructure safety of the venue is the responsibility of the venue owner.

Fire Safety & Emergency Evacuation

  • All staff are familiar with emergency exit routes and fire evacuation procedures for their teaching venues. In the event of an evacuation, students will be guided by their teacher to the designated assembly point. Parents/guardians should not attempt to re-enter the building during an evacuation.

Accidents & Emergencies

  • A First Aid box is available at each venue.

  • All teaching staff hold up-to-date First Aid training.

  • In the event of an injury or incident, an accident report will be completed.

  • If needed, emergency services will be contacted first, followed by the student’s parent/guardian using the contact information provided at registration.

Students with Medical Conditions

  • Parents must inform us of any medical conditions and update us if there are changes.

  • A plan will be put in place between the Principal and parent/guardian if special arrangements are needed.

  • Any required medication or medical equipment must be brought to class and must be in date.

First Aid & Medical Consent

  • Parents/guardians are asked to give consent for basic First Aid and emergency medical treatment when enrolling.

  • In case of emergency, the teacher will assess the situation and contact medical services if needed.

  • Parents will be notified immediately using the emergency contact details on file.

Infectious Disease Protocols

  • Jasmine Dance Academy follows current government and venue-specific guidance regarding infectious disease control (e.g. COVID-19, norovirus). Enhanced hygiene, ventilation, and distancing measures may be implemented as needed to protect students, teachers and parents/guardians.

Unexpected Closures (e.g. Weather or Power Outages)

  • In the event of severe weather, power failure, or other unexpected issues, classes may be cancelled for safety reasons. Parents/guardians will be notified as soon as possible via email or text. Make-up classes may be offered where possible.

We are committed to reviewing and updating this policy regularly to ensure it continues to meet the needs of our dance school.
